Mommie dearest! Throughout contemporary cinema, maternal characters have delivered a human truth: Motherhood is a joyously complicated spectrum. IF you liked Sinners? Ha, what am I on about - of course you liked sinners!!

At its core, Sinners (2025) is a film about, brotherhood, survival, good vs evil, supernatural threat, music, culture and community. The films i’ve picked for this list all feature at least one of these themes, some are more obvious than others but all are guaranteed to entertain you.

I had so many options to pick from for this list, Sinners was an incredibly inspiring and unique movie but it also reminded me why I love cinema. The story was poetic at times, the use of music was transcendent but most of all the core theme of brotherhood was magnetic.

Sinners (2025) is easily the best film i’ve seen this year and if you haven’t seen it yet, what are you doing? But if you’re like me and you have seen it, these films might quench a little of your thirst!

The Beauty of Mundanity | by Film Probe

Mundanity, being ordinary, commonplace, and not interesting. Mundanity describes the state of being mundane the absence of anything noteworthy in the everyday.

Do you ever find yourself stuck in life’s cruel routine? Performing the same acts over and over until it simply becomes all you know? These films all explore the idea of life’s tedious toil, life’s mundanity and often boring escapade.

The films mentioned explore life’s cyclical routines. Feelings of angst, boredom, and despair appear in life when we feel trapped inside life’s repetitive toil. Some of these movies are hopeless, but most try to reconcile and find comfort, meaning, and fulfilment in the everyday, and show us ways we can embrace the mundane lives we live.

Feeling Blue | by FilmProbe

This post dives into the ocean that is colour theory in cinema, I wanted to give you a variety of stills from a number of features that all showcase the colour blue.

Blue within cinema means a number of things, most commonly blue is associated with sadness, unease, water, nature and cold. Although all of these are correct, blue can be used to represent a sea of emotions, feelings and settings on camera.

An Insult to Life Itself | By Film Probe

An appreciation post for Studio Ghibli, recently a trend has taken the internet by storm; turning your images into the style of Studio Ghibli. I wanted to share a few of my favourite Studio Ghibli features, some of these will make you laugh and some of them will make you sob uncontrollably!

On the one hand, this trend has most likely been used innocently by audiences who simply enjoyed the style of the studio. In saying that, a lot of people in the film and television community have reacted negatively. Explaining the trend is offensive to animators and the studio. Personally, I hate the idea of technology competing with humans, I hate the prospect that technology could replace creatives.

Severance is filled with enigmatic moments, mysterious storylines and plenty of hidden meanings and metaphors. The show as a whole is distinctly unique and I believe there is nothing quite like it BUT in saying that, as we await the next season I wanted to suggest a handful of shows for you to check out.

Sad Girl Cinema | Part II | By FilmProbe

Although the title ‘sad girl’ cinema sounds lighthearted do not be fooled, these female characters are incredibly strong and work through a number of hard hitting, deeply emotional moments in their respective features & shows. These characters are not just ‘growing up’ or changing - each of these characters are persevering through moments of addiction, abuse, neglect, isolation, loneliness and/or deep sadness.

The Art Institute of Chicago | by Film Probe

This is my way of paying homage to Ferris Bueller’s Day Off (1986). I recently visited Chicago for the first time and I couldn’t help myself but try to recreate the famous scene filmed within the art institute.

This scene never made sense to me as a kid, it always felt really disjointed and random? But as an adult this scene is full of meaning and symbolism. John Hughes credited the art institute as a special place for him growing up, particularly “A Sunday Afternoon on the Island of La Grande Jatte”.

The scene explores Cameron’s inner turmoil and fears whilst showcasing the power of art. Essentially, I was always right as a kid, this scene is random and a change of pace for the whole film but that’s the beauty of it. This scene is the embodiment of Ferris’ famous quote, “Life moves pretty fast. If you don’t stop and look around once in a while, you could miss it.” Sometimes, it’s nice to decompress and have a change in pace, slow down and stare into a painting.

When I’m back in Chicago | by Film Probe

I love celebrating cities within cinema, sometimes the location of a film can be overlooked but for me, where a film is set makes all the difference. I wanted to share a few of my favourite films and tv shows set in the windy city of Chicago.

Of course, I could include a lot more if I ventured out into the suburbs of Chicago like Wayne’s World for example but I wanted to stay in the city. Chicago is a really incredibly city and most recognisably is home to Gotham in Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight.

Sad Girl Cinema | by Film Probe

A while ago I did a post called ‘Men don’t cry’ where I shared a collection of characters who cried on screen, since then I’ve seen an influx in the appreciation of ‘sad characters’.

Most notably @filmsyoushouldbewatching did a post called ‘Who Hurt you Sad Boy?’ which inspired me to make this!

Conclave (2024) | Film Probe Review

Take a step inside one of the most secretive ceremonies in the world. Conclave is a political thriller following one of the world most secretive and anxiety events - choosing the new Pope.

This film was a pleasant surprise for me, since it won a handful of BAFTAs and is nominated for a number of Academy Awards I knew I had to finally sit down and watch it. I am so pleased I did, what a magnificent mystery thriller, a completely unexpected entertaining feature.

Cinema is important to a lot of people in this world, it’s a chance to escape from reality and a chance to show your artistic flair. Cinema is stories, cinema is performance and cinema is influential.

The Academy Awards will mean nothing to a lot of people but to me, since I was a kid, it’s represented the best of the best. I wanted to share this post because I feel like the industry is changing and the academy can’t keep up.
