#95 | Pretty Woman

A unconventional love, Pretty Woman (1990) stars Julia Roberts and Richard Gere as the unlikely pairing of Vivian Ward and Edward Lewis. The story of Pretty Woman sees Edward, a rich entrepreneur, who hires Vivian, a prostitute, to accompany him to a few social events. Trouble ensues when he quickly falls in love with her and they try to bridge the gap between their two, very different worlds.

There is no doubt that Pretty Woman has become one of the most iconic cinematic romances of the early 90s and beyond, this feature stands the test of time with a gripping narrative and utterly loveable character dynamics. Julia Roberts is magnetic as Vivian and truly holds her own during the film, she shines from beginning to end and has made her mark on cinema history. Pretty Woman easily has one of the greatest lines from cinema, ever, "Big mistake, huge". This one line can bring a huge smile to my face and take me back to watching this film for the first time, I was blown away by the genius writing and simplicity behind the storyline. Although the overall narrative is simple it doesn't take away from the enjoyment, romance comedies shouldn't be overtly complex, rom-coms need to be easy to watch and easy to fall in love with- Pretty Woman ticks all the right boxes.

I never get bored of watching Richard Gere open that jewellery box and close it on Roberts' fingers, iconic. Simply, iconic. Pretty Woman easily belongs on the top 100 list, it evokes joy every time I think about it and truly represents the power of character and the power of acting. The roles were cast perfectly and I hope nobody ever attempts to remake it.
