It should go without saying that Martin Scorsese's three hour long comedy is one of his greatest feature to date. The Wolf of Wall Street (2013) is undoubtedly a cinematic spectacle, staring Leonardo DiCaprio in the title role of the infamous Jordan Belfort, we see some of cinemas greatest depictions of greed, over indulgence and plane and simple buffoonery. One of the greatest things to know about this feature is the majority of it actually happened, for those who don't know, Jordan Belfort was a real man. An entrepreneur, speaker, author, former stockbroker, and financial criminal. In 1999, he pleaded guilty to fraud and related crimes in connection with stock-market manipulation and running a boiler room as part of a penny-stock scam. Essentially, Belfort is one of the most intelligent fraudsters to ever exist and his story, although problematic, is pretty damn impressive.
The film shows Belfort's start as a stockbroker, working his way up through the ranks until one day, it clicks. The penny-stock scheme is presented to him like a gift from god and from that point the movie takes a turn and plunges into the depths of greed where there is no coming back from. The film introduces us to his posse, a bunch of somewhat criminals who are prepared to do anything for the cash. The casting choices are stellar, every character is perfectly presented by their actor and each member of the cast bring incredibly nuanced and distinct performances which make this film all the most enjoyable.
With a f** count of 506, The Wolf of Wall Street is understandably rated 18 and new viewers should be advised that this film is not a faint hearted family comedy. This film is outrageously hilarious and crude, rightfully so but simply be warned. You only need to watch this film for roughly five minutes until you realise you're in for a wild ride. Overall, The Wolf of Wall Street is unstoppable, utterly fantastic and easily one of the greatest comedic, dramatised biopics ever made. A true inspiration story and a truly fascinating depiction of character.
