Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024): A Tim Burton Classic or a Ghostly Disappointment? Reviewing the Legacy Sequel

Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) is a feast for your eyes, it tickles your funny bone with inappropriate weirdness and wacky irreverence. This film is as though Tim Burton’s brain exploded onto the screen, a zany cocktail of unforgettable characters, surrealist dream sequences and eye widening carnage.

It is truly surreal to watch this film 36 years after the original, nostalgia oozing out of every corner and originality bursting out of the screen. One of the most prominent details I will take away from Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) was the use of practical effects, paying homage to its predecessor Burton spared no expense when it came to using realistic, bone chilling make-up, props and set design.

Michael Keaton, Catherine O’Hara and Winona Ryder all reprised their roles with ease. Keaton jumped back into Beetlejuice as though no time had passed whilst Jenna Ortega’s newly added Astrid incorporated a new dimension to the storyline.

Monica Bellucci’s Delores was a somewhat unnecessary plot line but nonetheless, her presence was reminiscent of Sally from The Nightmare Before Christmas (1993) and she added a disturbing undertone to the story overall. Overall, Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (2024) exceeded all expectations, with an ear to ear smile on my face I can confirm this is a perfect sequel to the beloved Beetlejuice (1988).
