In a remote Zambian community a young girl, Shula, is denounced as a witch by the community. Shula is sent on a trajectory of exploitation, as a tethered member of a witches' camp. Directed by Welsh / Zambian filmmaker Rungano Nyoni, this feature is a tale of helplessness and power.

The character of Shula is heartbreaking, she is a performed beautifully and evokes a charming yet unassuming role. She is quiet and isolated from the world, I felt connected to her through sadness and her story never seemed to get better. This film is a powerful display of fear, being scared of what you don’t understand and wanting to force conformity. Rungano Nyoni has a key eye when it comes to framing her shots and capturing intimate, heartbreaking moments. She is a detailed director and I thoroughly enjoyed watching through her distinct tone of voice.

I found this film to be profoundly unique, beyond interesting and utterly heart breaking at times. A commentary on fear, community and isolation; the concept centres around helplessness and the impression of earthly and natural powers. I Am Not a Witch (2017) is gritty and deeply dark at times, the plot description online might have you believe it’s comedic but it isn’t. This film takes you on a journey, a sad and unique journey.
