Exploring the Dark History of America: Martin Scorsese's Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) | Review

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) has left me speechless. Time froze and nothing could distract me from the tragic tale immortalised on screen, shinning light on a story of heart ache, treachery and deceit. Each minute was precious time spent enlightening audiences and sharing a dark side of history. From the ingrained image of the Osage tribe dancing in oil to the creative finale monologue, which saw Scorsese himself speaking the final words. Every moment was important, every minute was impactful and every hour that passed by broke my heart.

Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) is an American epic Western crime drama directed and co-produced by Martin Scorsese, who also co-wrote the script alongside Eric Roth. This gut wrenching piece is based on the 2017 non-fiction book of the same name by David Grann and I cannot express my gratitude for Scorsese and Roth for bringing this story to the screen.

DiCaprio alongside Lily Gladstone, was a beautiful pairing. The duo demonstrated immaculate talent and carried the audience through the story, their performances were undeniably magnificent and Gladstone was moving to say the least. DeNiro’s character embarked on the most outrageous journey, he embodied everything he could to display such an evil and his performance was also, magnificent.

I was left leaving the cinema with a clenched fist and a sickness in the pit of my stomach. Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) is like nothing I have ever seen before, I was utterly moved by every word and undoubtedly pained by the suffering and mistreatment I witnessed on screen. Scorsese has outdone himself. This piece of cinema is a true representation of compelling and engaging storytelling, not one moment left empty and not one resource left unused.

Murder, lies and control. This feature showcases everything wrong with humanity and the capability of people to fight for what they believe is theirs. This story is hard to digest, difficult to believe but most of all, deeply saddening. To know this actually happened is shameful and I cannot fathom the pain and suffering brought to life within this cinema epic. This film has rocked me to my core and I am truly inspired by the words spoken and the action taken, the cast and crew all output a piece to be incredibly proud of.

The greatest film of the year, without a doubt the most gripping, captivating and fascinating piece of cinema I have seen in 2023. Killers of the Flower Moon (2023) may look intimidating, an extremely long run time and a distressing plot at the centre but do not miss the opportunity to be captivated by such a story. This film with illuminate you, not just through its narrative but through the hypnotising sounds and heavenly visuals. Every element of this feature is perfect. I cannot recommend it enough.
