Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story is season 2 of the American biographical crime drama anthology television series created by Ryan Murphy and Ian Brennan for Netflix. This season centres on the 1989 Lyle and Erik Menéndez murders.
We all remember the impact season one had on the world after its release, bringing to light the intimate details of Jeffery Dahmer’s gruesome crimes. This season showcases another infamous case, the Menendez brothers dominated the media during the early 90s when they were arrested for murdering their parents in cold blood.
I want start by noting the themes of this crime drama may be triggering for some viewers and you should be aware of that before watching. Personally, I am an avid watcher of crime thrillers and true crime documentaries which is why I love the combination of cinematic execution and factual plot lines. When I know Ryan Murphy’s name is associated with something of this theme, I know it is going to be an intense, captivating watch and this season exceeded all my expectations.
With a total of nine episodes, this engaging crime thriller sees the crimes from all angles, as a viewer we are encouraged to see the story from the brothers point of view before they reveal more and more evidence. I was catapulted into the drama and intensity of the story and I was utterly infatuated my the actors who portrayed Lyle and Erik. Cooper Koch and Alexander Chavez delivered some of the most gripping moments on screen and I am still in awe of their dedication and execution of the roles.
Episode five was a personal favourite of mine, this episode linked both the beginning and end of the season with a magnetic performance from Koch (Erik). It was at this moment where I felt the shift in story, the shift in tone and the apprehension for what was about to unfold. ‘Monsters: The Lyle and Erik Menendez Story’ is a perfect example of intelligent and unique storytelling when working with a crime of this nature. If you are a fan of crime dramas or true crime documentaries, this series is the ideal combination of both.
