I was very aware of the Gucci scandal before watching this feature, so I was very intrigued to see how they depicted the characters and the infamous demise of a marriage. The story sees Adam Driver and Lady Gaga in the title roles - when Patrizia Reggiani, an outsider from humble beginnings, marries into the Gucci family, her unbridled ambition begins to unravel the family legacy and triggers a reckless spiral of betrayal, decadence, revenge -- and ultimately murder.
Their physical appearance generally represent the real people, they both look the part, there is no denying that. Both do well to maintain the Italian accent, although neither were completely convincing, they did a good job for the first half nonetheless. Ridley Scott sets up expectations, hopes and dreams that we all know are unattainable for poor Gucci. Knowing the outcome of the film almost hindered my enjoyment in the beginning as I knew Patricia’s intentions - which I should commend Gaga for, she definitely embodied the darkness to her, the character shifts after the first hour, it doesn’t take long to see her change and fight for what she thinks is hers.
Al Pacino and Jared Leto are definitely the stand out actors in this feature, which is a surprise to me, they both embodied the essence of their characters and completely melted into their roles, mind, body and soul.
Overall, House of Gucci (2021) was not at all what I expected or wanted it to be. I was expecting a loud and proud feature, larger than life characters and bold choices. I only got a handful of those moments, Leto was captivating, Gaga and Driver had a few moments that drew me in but sadly, overall, this film was overdrawn and long winded. I found myself wanting the ending to appear, by half way I was dying for the climax to hit but it didn’t until the very end, which was disappointing. I wanted more, I wanted it to be dramatised rather than a ‘reality’ approach. I mostly enjoyed it but I regrettably won’t be sitting down and watching it again.
