Let's Talk Gucci...

'House of Gucci' (2021) is an upcoming American biographical crime film directed by Ridley Scott. The film is based on the 2001 book ‘The House of Gucci: A Sensational Story of Murder, Madness, Glamour and Greed’. Staring the likes of Adam Driver, Lady Gaga, Jared Leto, Al Pacino and Jeremy Irons, this dramatic retelling of history will being light to an event I am sure a lot of the modern public are unaware of.

Heres what we know about the House of Gucci and it’s plot:

Driver stars as Maurizio Gucci, the heir of the eponymous luxury fashion house. Gaga stars as Patricia Reggiani, his wife, the duo married in 1973 and had two children, Allegra and Alexandra. During their marriage Reggiani was a well-known socialite who loved the finer things in life. She was once quoted saying, “I would rather weep in a Rolls-Royce than be happy on a bicycle”. In 1985 Gucci filed for divorce, a battle that would finally end in 1991. A few years later, the 46 year old heir was shot and killed by a hitman outside of his Milan office. It was later revealed that Reggiani organised the killing and was arrested in 1997. I am more than certain that the murder of Maurizio will unfold in the centre of the film, therefore having the beginning set up their toxic, lavish relationship and the ending set up Patricia’s demise and confession.

Patricia was dubbed, ‘The Black Widow’ by the Italian press and sentenced to 29 years in prison. Released in 2014 she was hounded by the press, asking ‘Why did you hire a hitman to kill Gucci? Why didn’t you kill him yourself?’, she would simply answer, ‘My eyesight is not so good, I didn’t want to miss’. I think this quote from Patricia herself embodies everything Gaga needs to bring to her embodiment of the character, both Gaga’s parents have Italian ancestry so I am hopeful to think she has a familiarity with the accent. Although I may not be Gaga’s biggest fan as an actor I do think she is cast perfectly for this role, she defiantly looks the party and I have no doubts that she can bring depth and a little humour to the role of Patricia.

I personally am very excited to see this crime drama, the narrative is strong and the characters are so garish they write themselves. I really want Scott to bring organic humour to this intense storyline through the characters outlandishness, similarly to the way he directed Matt Damon in The Martian (2015). I want natural comedic moments to rise out of a toxic situation and I have no doubt that Driver can bring exactly what I want. The man knows comedy but also knows how to control it, he is one of my all time favourite actors for a reason.

Ridley Scott has been trying to get this project off the ground for well over a decade. Originally rumoured to have Angelina Jolie and Leonardo DiCaprio star in the crime drama. Later in 2012, Penelope Cruz was attached to the project and more recently Margot Robbie was to star in the title role back in 2016. Essentially this picture has been passed around a lot of hands but ultimately I believe the final cast is perfection. The recently released photographs of Driver and Gaga in costume brings the illusion to life, I think the two look the part and should deliver solid, believable performance.
