Netflix unspoken thriller, The Clovehitch Killer (2018) | REVIEW

Often Netflix is clouded by the never ending options of films and tv to watch but now and again, I am luckily met with an interesting suggestion. The Clovehitch Killer (2018) is an ominous thriller which sees a young boy skeptical of his father and slowly trying to uncover the secrets he is so desperately trying to hide. This film had my attention from the very beginning, the overall tone of the movie was very raw. With minimal music or sound this film was quiet and eery, beyond disturbing but resulted in a most satisfying end. The story was simple yet incorporated some truly unique moments, watching a son try to trick his father and fear his own father may in fact be the serial killer parading around town- the dynamic between father and son is executed very well by their actors. In particular Dylan McDermott who plays the role of Don, I know his work from American Horror Story and he is a truly talented actor. He brought this charming yet grotesque character to life and the whole film surrounded his perfect performance.

Like I said, this was a very raw film and it felt as though it was playing out in real time. Going into this film blind is defiantly the only way to experience it. Knowing so little about the narrative and simply clicking on this film randomly only made the viewing experience better, I think this is an unspoken gem and one you should watch if you’re a fan of crime thrillers. It felt as though I was watching a documentary at times, the family all felt so natural and the way it was executed through lack of sound and simple camera angles only helped the overall atmosphere.

Overall, The Clovehitch Killer was an unexpected thrill and definitely kept me entertained. If you’re a crime thriller or mystery fan this film will keep you on your toes and show you some uncomfortable moments and some truly heroic ones. I really enjoyed this movie and highly recommend it, I had no idea it existed and I’m pleased I gave it a chance.
