Nosferatu is one of the most influential pieces of horror cinema, the character himself is an infamous figure of death and destruction. When I first heard about Eggers’ interpretation I was ecstatic, Eggers’ has become know for his distinct blend of horror and folklore along with his eye to catch beauty in the most grotesque moments. Robert Eggers’ Nosferatu (2024) accomplished everything I knew it would; visually, this if one of the most beautiful horror films I have ever seen. The combination of colour palette and framing made for some of the most dazzling shots, each moment was captured with precision which emulated the beauty of German Expressionism and Gothic cinema.
Nosferatu (2024) is a remake of F. W. Murnau's 1922 silent film and therefore, will be incredibly familiar to plenty of watchers. The film does not attempt to retell the story from a new perspective, instead, Eggers’ gives us the exact blueprints of the original but through a lens of technical brilliance. Despite having prior knowledge of the story and its climax, this did not distract from the anticipation and tension building throughout. The film continued to draw me in, as though I was captured by Nosferatu’s shadow and falling deeper and deeper into the characters decent into madness.
Starring at Ellen Hutter, Depp portrays her talent for physicality and intense emotional distress. Giving a raw, disturbing unforgettable performance.
Thomas Hutter, Hoult acts as a catalyst for the films plot. He showcases his subtle and natural acting style which lends well for his characters soft and vulnerable demeanour.
Count Orlok, himself, Skarsgård is becoming known for his portrayal of monsters on screen. His enigmatic performance was spine chilling and beautifully grotesque and impressive beyond belief.
Nosferatu (2024) is not a film for the casual consumer, this film is a love letter to the original and it honours the story through its slow pacing, historically accurate setting and genius use of lighting and sound. This film is a feast for the eyes, it will entice you with its enigmatic storytelling and enthral you in its atmospheric landscapes. Nosferatu (2024) is an explosion of everything cinema has to offer an audience both technically and emotionally. Robert Eggers’ didn’t attempt to reinvent the story of Nosferatu (2024), instead he gave us a horrifyingly beautiful interpretation that reminds us just how terrifying it must have been to watch in 1922.
