| Disclaimer | This probe is all pre-release opinions and speculation before actually seeing the feature. At FilmProbe we thought we’d break down the trailer and bring you our thoughts on the newly improved version of Suicide Squad directed by James Gunn.
Rebranding, recasting, rewriting and completely reimagining the Suicide Squad into what we all hope will be an absolutely show stopping adaptation. In all honesty, I despised the first attempt as Suicide Squad in 2016, it was truly lazy and unimaginative which is why the addition of James Gunn makes me incredibly excited for the 2021 movie. Without James Gunn I would have no expectations for this film but his name on it gives me hope and I trust him to give us an incredible project.
I’m not going to compare this movie to the previous, I’m going to talk about it as a blank slate, a new movie with nothing to hold it up against. If you’re unaware, Gunn directed both Guardians of the Galaxy movies and is directing the third instalment for 2023. This attention to detail and overall cinematic style is exceptional, he has a specific method to his directing that brings out unique visuals and nostalgic soundtracks.
The trailer is action packed, almost too much to take in. The attack on earth is obviously Starro which I am incredibly curious to see come to life on the big screen. Starro is a ridiculous and hilarious villain, as Gunn says himself “he’s a giant, cerulean blue starfish, but he’s also f***cking terrifying”. Honestly, this movie appears to be just that, hilarious yet terrifying and I think if Gunn can pull of the perfect blend of those two opposing styles, he’s got himself a winner.
I’ve heard Gunn has tried to cram as many 80s references and other art inspirations into this movie. As I said previously, he has an eye for detail that a lot of viewers would miss but ultimately makes the overall film feel cohesive and fully developed. I’m excited to hear the official soundtrack as Gunn has a proclaimed reputation for using nostalgic and foot tapping inducing music, which I personally cannot wait for!
“If superhero movies don’t change, it’s gonna get really boring” - James Gunn, 2021. Couldn’t have said it better myself, Disney / Marvel have a very distinct style and DC now need to grab the bull by the horns and create their own style, I think Gunn can help them achieve that.
