Staring the transcendent Rosamund Pike, I Care A Lot is a frustratingly mesmerising thriller that grips you from the word go. I Care A Lot will encourage you to feel every emotion possible, it is anger inducing, frustrating, funny, upsetting but most of all it has the power to make you livid towards Pike’s character and in all honesty, I loved hating her. The plot of this thrill ride is a complex one, let us start with Pike’s infamous character; a crooked legal guardian who drains the savings of her elderly wards. She is strictly evil, manipulative yet powerful and intelligent. She is living the high life until she meets her match when an elderly woman, she tries to swindle turns out to be more than she first appeared… trust me, the reveal is perfection.
I went into this film with very little knowledge of its narrative, but I knew from the second it began I was going to thoroughly enjoy the ride. The tone of the movie is organic, everything plays out just as it should, although we are thrown around the story, not knowing exactly how the film is going to end, we ultimately get the ending we so desire and deserve! The intense build up of narrative is steady, from the beginning we manifest our disgust towards Pike’s character and for the duration of the film our hatred only gets stronger and stronger, this gradual emotional incline is made possible by the incredible writing and the outstanding performances throughout this picture. This movie creates a hateable villain out of a regular businesswoman, and I believe the execution was immaculate. Pike’s character is a strong independent woman who is not afraid to step on you to get what she wants.
If you are looking for a film to pique your interest and intrigue you endlessly, this is the movie for you. I Care A Lot made me speechless once it ended as the film was so compact and well executed I had zero faults or complaints, I feel in love with this crime thriller and I would happily watch it over and over again. If you are yet to watch this movie, all I can tell you is… It will shock you and it will encourage you to invest your emotions into each character, you will be conflicted and confused about whose side you’re on and untimely you will be on the edge of your seat waiting for the ending… which is utterly satisfying in every way possible.
I do not think I have ever encountered a character quite like hers in cinema, she ticks all the unlikable qualities yet part of you still wants to see her fight to the end! I Care A Lot absolutely shocked me both from its unapologetically conniving narrative and I hope to god it isn’t based off of true events or a real individual. This movie is one of the best I have seen in a long time, it keeps you wanting more and more and more than satisfies you at the end. Rosamund Pike is a woman you do not want to mess with, from Gone Girl to this, who knows what else she is capable of brining to the screen.
