If Anything Happens I Love You (2020)

Who knew something so short could be so impactful, this Netflix animated short film is only twelve minutes long with no dialogue but it speaks volumes. This short story sees grieving parents struggling to come to terms with loosing their daughter in a school shooting. The film is incredibly moving and brings a tear to my eye just thinking about it, essentially the animated short is heavily based on the tragic Florida school shooting from 2018.

I wanted to share a relatively short review, expressing my opinions towards this short. As an aspiring film maker and a cinephile at heart I love how this short is as simple as possible, sometimes to make an impact we don’t need to fill films with mass amount of content instead sometimes the smallest elements hit the hardest. Essentially, what I am trying to say it this short is far more impactful than half of the movies i’ve seen this year, it lets you fill in the gaps without directing you in any way, the short is almost bland, the frame is barely filled with animation but none of that matters. The devil is in the detail and in this case the detail is the emotional connection to the characters, I felt connected to nameless, almost faceless characters and that is almost unbelievable.

As I said, I wanted this review to be short, like the movie itself. To conclude I would recommend you give this a watch, whether you watch it once twice or five times, just sit back and let the connection form, let yourself feel the impact of reality. Think about why this short was made and let that feeling overcome you, this is a special short that will stay in my mind for a long time.
