I Saw The TV Glow (2024), distributed by A24 demands your attention, although at times it was a little outdrawn and slow paced it continued to intrigue me.
A classmate introduces teenage Owen to a mysterious late-night TV show -- a vision of a supernatural world beneath their own. In the pale glow of the television, Owen's view of reality begins to crack.
This feature showcases the impact media can have on an individual, especially young adults who are beginning to form into their own person. This film could be interpreted as a metaphor for gender dysmorphia and belonging. This film takes you on a journey, a confused journey of self discovery, friendship and acceptance - it is not a simple watch, I Saw The TV Glow will have you scratching you head at times but if you’re able to decode the message, it represents something beautiful.
In saying that, the film took a while to draw me in. At first, I was hesitate and didn’t quite warm to the characters but as time went on and Maddy’s relationship with Owen transformed I was excited to see what happened. Maddy was a character I was far more excited by than Owen, although Owen was struggling with his confidence and identity his character choices were a little too closed off for me and I didn’t warm to him. Maddy though, had power on screen; I am a fan of Bridgette Lundy Paine and have always enjoyed them on screen so maybe I’m a little bias, haha!
To conclude, I Saw The TV Glow was a discombobulated feature which took you on a surrealist journey with a hidden agenda and message. The sentiment was heartwarming, the idea was enjoyable and aesthetically the film was beautiful to watch. Colour palettes and lighting was something that really elevated this feature but overall, it was a little too disjointed to impress me fully - I had a fun time but I won’t be returning for another watch.
