Should Sadie Sink Have Passed on the Role in Disney + O'Dessa (2025)?

O’Dessa (2025) recently released on Disney +, with Stranger Things’ Sadie Sink in the title role I was intrigued by this neon rock musical.

The story follows a farm girl in search to recover a cherished family heirloom. She travels alone to a strange and dangerous city where she meets her one true love. To save his soul, she must put the power of destiny to the ultimate test. From this plot description, you can tell this story is a little unconventional.

O’Dessa (2025) is a clumsy sci-fi musical, through attempting to be surrealist and wacky the story looses integrity and becomes a joke of itself. From the beginning I was disconnected from the character of O (Sink) and found she was underdeveloped and emotionless - meaning the story had no emotional attachment. Although O’Dessa (2025) shines with its neon colour palette and interesting cinematography, those elements are not enough to save this forgettable musical. It’s as though the director watched Blade Runner 2049 (2017) and decided to make it more family friendly and cutesy.

I also want to note I am a musical fan, I love a rock musical but this film missed the mark. The songs were lacklustre and the characters were random and non of the elements flowed well together, everything was at a disconnect and I genuinely think this film was bad.
