The Dangers of Wishing for a Different Life: A Review of "A Different Man (2024)

A Different Man (2024) explores the concept that beauty is in the eye of the beholder. The feature challenges the idea of beauty, what it means to be ‘attractive’ and the importance of inner beauty and self-love. A Different Man (2024) is a complex, dark and deeply perplexing story of identity, self-perception, and acceptance.

My biggest take away from this film was the concept of masks, both literally and metaphorically. The story navigates the theme of masks we don in day to day life, how we pretend to be someone we are not and the idea of ourselves we project into the world. We all have a mask, a form of protection we wear to hide from reality and A Different Man (2024) used this as a message and reminder to live authentically.

Life is what you make it, when the cards seem stacked against you - only you can push through the challenges and achieve triumphant success.

A Different Man (2024) plays with the idea of being careful what you wish for, Edward longed to be the perfect version of himself but once he achieved this - he was no longer himself. Instead, taunted by the physical representation of everything he could have been  in the form of Oswald. Oswald is a charismatic, charming, endearing reminder of Edward’s former beauty, the side of himself which he hid from the world. Now, although his outside appears ‘perfect’, his inside steadily becomes ugly.

Sebastian Stan is one of those actors I trust, when I see his name attached to a feature I sigh with relief; this feature only solidified my admiration for him as a performer. Stan took on a difficult task, going through the physical transformation is one thing but most importantly, he embodied the impact of his physicality. Stan was able to evolve his mannerisms, his voice and his interactions to emulate the inner turmoil of Edward’s personal defeat.

Adam Pearson played the role of Oswald, an authentic, raw depiction of someone living their life with a physical difference. Pearson’s performance felt so real I believe this was an authentic version of himself and if so, he is charming, charismatic and a magnetic person. His role played as a catalyst for Edward’s decline and Pearson gave a believable, likeable performance.

A Different Man (2024) is a film with layers, this is a complex narrative that tackles a variety of vulnerable themes through a human character journey. Beginning with the victim, that grows into the hero with all the potential, only to be pulled from success into the abyss of envy and obsession. Edward’s character is a minefield of emotion and Sebastian Stan did an undoubtedly beautiful job at displaying each of Edward’s life chapters.

By the end of the feature I was debilitated by the realisation of a wasted life, Edward concentrated far too much on what’s on the outside rather than looking in and embracing the challenges life had given him. A Different Man (2024) was far from what I expected, it intrigued me, surprised me, shocked me and truly moved me. I was stunned by the performances and the unpredictability of the plot, I found this to be a memorable, thought provoking and unique watch.
