Unraveling the Mystery: A Review of 'Only Murders in the Building' Season Four

Only Murders in the Building S4 (2024)

Continuing the campy extravagance of its previous seasons, Only Murders in the Building (2024) takes you on a thrilling, fun filled journey of mystery and murder… duh, it’s in the title.

Season four starts off with a bang, shots are fired and another murder takes place in the Arconia only this time its Charles’ longtime stunt double and friend, Sazz Pataki (Jane Lynch). The podcast trio take it upon themselves to follow the trail of clues until they discover who did it and why Sazz was murdered. Please note, this review contains no spoilers for season four…

Only Murders in the Building (2021-) is a simple mystery drama that has an equal balance of humour and horror. We get to see a variety of crimes alongside the charming comedies of Martin Short and Steve Martin with deadpan Selena Gomez in the centre. Season four only develops their unconventional relationships further and gives each character a chance to grow. We also get the chance to meet a variety of new supporting characters who all add dimension and question to the story, from the return of Paul Rudd with a suspicious Irish accent to Meryl Streep’s return as Loretta.

This show may not be a serious drama but it never fails to get a reaction out of me, I was waiting week by week to see the newest clues and try to decode the mystery. I think ‘Only Murders’ is the perfect amalgamation of comedy and crime, it doesn’t need you to think much it just engages you in the jokes and wise cracks. In my opinion, Martin Short is the glue keeping this show together along with the unpredictable writing twists. Short is a comedy clown, he applies physical comedy to all his lines and has become one of my favourite television characters.

Season four was not the best season of the show and did lack substance in the middle episodes, we’d gain no insight and simply not move forward in the investigation. That being said, I’m unapologetically hooked to this show. I have been watching since season one and it never fails to bring me back for another season, I find it to be one of the most original tv series you can stream right now and easily one of the funniest.
