‘Vengeance Most Fowl’ sees the return of ‘The Wrong Trousers’ (1993) villain Feathers McGraw, the adorable penguin who is in fact a diamond thief and out for revenge on the inventor who caught him. Wallace and Gromit is a piece of British history, the pair first appeared on our screens on Christmas Eve 1990. Since then, the stop motion animation, produced by Aardman Animations, has taken over the world and continues to tell us compelling stories.
The last time we saw Wallace and Gromit in a feature film was ‘A Matter of Loaf and Death’ in 2008. Having set the bar incredibly high for themselves, I anxiously awaited this film. I was intrigued and humoured by the intelligent plot line and the addition of Norbot, the smart gnome.
Vengeance Most Fowl was released at the perfect time, watching a stop motion feature amongst the new world and popularisation of special effect tools was genius.
The films commentary throughout was a warning for relying on artificial intelligence and the dangers of it, the story was constructed around this message and it feels particularly poignant when the message is told through a handmade, claymation feature. A film which relies solely on its creators hands and physical creativity talking about the potential problems with AI, that is primary reason why you should sit down and enjoy this film.
Aside from the bigger message about AI, Vengeance Most Fowl is a family friendly animation which speaks to the endless creativity in the world, reinforcing the idea to never stop being creative. The film values its chance to share a message but it is also just an enjoyable film, the message doesn’t distract from the story it only enhances and enriches the plot. It can be easy to find fault in something from your childhood and Vengeance Most Fowl wasn’t what I expected it to be, I wanted more action from Feather McGraw but the film has still become instantly nostalgic for me.
Overall, Wallace and Gromit’s newest adventure was memorable and intelligent, these characters and their stories speak to generations of viewers. It is a feature that brings families together and is hard not to enjoy, Wallace and Gromit represents a classic form of animation and I truly love experiences these types of films. Vengeance Most Fowl is not the greatest Wallace and Gromit story but it was nonetheless fun, silly and incredibly British.
I highly recommend this film for all ages, as a younger viewer it’ll make you laugh. As an older viewer it’ll make you think but also laugh! Wallace and Gromit films are much more complex than they appear, a commentary on the world through the lens of an eccentric inventor and his wholesome, loyal pooch.
